Richard Liu, CEO of JD.com

Richard Liu is the CEO of the Chinese online retail company JD.com, which has surpassed Amazon China and Alibaba to become the second-largest e-commerce platform in China behind only Alibaba.

Liu Qiangdong graduated from Peking University in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science before continuing his studies at Yale School of Management. As an undergraduate student, he studied abroad in the United States, where he worked as a research assistant to China’s former vice president Zeng Peiyan.

Following his graduation from Peking University in 1999, Liu Qiangdong obtained a position as co-founder and CTO of Tuya.com (a website that aggregates information on various Internet resources), but he resigned from his position in 2002 and returned to the United States to work at Yahoo! China.

In 2001, he joined the founding team of Chinese search engine Soso.com, where he served as CTO and architect before moving upstairs the ranks to become chairman of Soso’s board. After Soso was acquired by Microsoft in 2004 for $265 million, Liu founded JD.com with his colleagues from Soso.com in November of that year.

In 2008, Qiangdong co-founded a venture capital firm called GGV Capital with partners John Leu, Luke Li, and Moritz Law from the United States and Ng Kok Tham from Singapore. The firm focuses on early-stage investment opportunities in China, Southeast Asia, and North America.

Liu has also been active in government affairs. In 2012 he was appointed to serve on the board of the National Committee of Experts on Internet Financial Security for the State Council for an unspecified period of time. He serves as a member of the National Committee of Experts on Public Ethics and Social Morals (NCESM).

Liu is widely known for founding Soso and leading JD.com. These two companies have changed the way people search for information using the Internet. See related link for additional information.
